Hey whoops hi everyone -- still here. can anyone even still read this? does anyone still read this? i think by now ive lost u all, which is good, so i can just write (almost) wwhatever. surprisingly this blog still gets a lot of hits, but they all get forwarded to the "new place." a few things:

ive always enjoyed the southwest desert, so so pretty. Finally got to visit Albuquerque, which ive wondered about since 6th grade when i discovered Weird Al. It was aight. Reaching RISD-levels of tiredness.

as a safe and fun way to pass time when zach was sleeping i took a lot of pictures of myself driving. i have a lot of good ones, and i think when i drive my eyes become slightly cockeyed.

My final cut is due in 7 days (6 now?), which is stressful, to say the least. I know ill be able to pull through but im sure if ill feel really happy with it. its weird, ive never cared TOO much but i realized that people are actually going to see this stuff now so i feel a lot more.. self aware?

Anyways, school aside, I almost know where I'm living next year. 95% chance I'll be home this summer, so fun things will be happening. Right now im aiming for mid-june arrival? Im actually really excited for this summer, even though it will probably be spent working an irrelevant job for minuscule amounts of money. but drums. lots and lots of drums. alllll day, in a hot garage. and driving, oh my god.

last week I got the chance to meet with Takeshi Murata, one of my favorite contemporary animators, and it was probably one of the most reassuring things ive had in a while. Hes actually a RISD grad from.. 97 I believe? who is doing quite well simply making limited edition animations and selling them to galleries/collectors. It's an unusual place for an animator, and its nice to know that there is potentially something outside of the commercial world and the festival world post-risd. if youre good enough. by the way, if you get the chance too see his stuff definitely check it out--but not shitty quality youtube rips. i never really appreciated a lot of his stuff (like Melter) until seeing it in good resolution. And theres so much of his stuff that isn't available online-- his more mediocre stuff is up, but if you can find a copy of Cone Eater its mmmmm delicious (soundtrack by Robert Beatty, from hairpolice/ex-wolf eyes i think). But yeah, Takeshi was basically the nicest man on the world and I wish I could be his best friend. Something about late 90s rhode island was just spitting out all these guys who are the sweetest people youll ever meet who made a pretty good name for themselves. I wish it was more like that now. RISD appears to be on more of a stint since the 2000s.... i guess theres Seth McFarlane? Yeah..

Hey, this is like the most stuff i've written on here in months probably. Most likely because i've spent the past few weeks holed up not doing anything or talking to people trying to finish this train wreck, aaand my camera is still non-functional. I've finally decided to move my postings to another blog. I've been meaning to disassociate myself with ieatnoise for a while now, mostly because its slightly embarrassing, but i also just dont want this to be the first (er second) thing that comes up when you search my name. I'm fine with randos reading about my life , i just dont want this to be some people's first perception of me. Anyways, long story short: I'm gonna keep this blog around (cant stop after 250 posts) and will continue posting on it things like i am now, mainly life happenings, etc, but im going to make it password protected. Back in PVD. Came back kinda gloomy, but I'd forgotten how lovely wintersession is. I feel like i have all the time in the world to do all the things ive been meaning to get around to. I even finally cleared out our hallway today, something thats needed to be done since we moved in here last spring. Various uncategorized updates:

1. my camera is broken (?)
somewhere between christmas and disneyland something and something something, i dont know, anyways i have to figure out why it wont turn on. Basically, there might not be pictures for a bit. I think. I havent really looked at to be honest. Maybe the battery isnt charged.

2. i got a new phone ( :c )
we switched to verizon, which i guess is cool because its cheaper but not so cool because there are no good "dumb" phones anymore so youre forced into buying low-end smart-phone-wannabees. I just want a legit candybar nokia phone, texting blind doesnt work on touchscreens so well, and that was my favorite past-time pre switch to verizon. I feel like a mom with this phone too. On the bright side, i now have a mediocre phone camera and picture messaging. My old phone definitely couldnt do that. I also have access to the internet 24/7 now, which means my real life will only further deteriorate.

4. Disneyland made their corndogs about 40% smaller
but other than that it was a good new years trip. we saw mr.sierks

5. i bought a laptop
finally caved and bought a semi-netbook acer (aspiron 1410 to be specific, HTH friends), which, as far as i can tell, is totally worth it. My first personal laptop, and i must say its quite liberating (11.6" / 3 lbs). I just want to throw it around. Efficiency has increased twofold in my digital dealings--dedicated computer for work and fun now, with some cross pollination occurring.

that was only the longest week of my life. So glad to be able to finally move on (well--almost). My crits actually went surprisingly well, which I'm happy about because i was actually pretty pessimistic about both my animation finals until they were about 95% done. I feel good about both of them now. As of a few minutes ago I just finished my final Brown paper, and now I'm home free--quite literally, my flight leaves at 1pm tomorrow, and I should be getting into LAX sometime between 11-12. I just hope the massive amounts of snow don't create any unforeseen problems. I still have a bit of sound work and post production to do on my puppet final so that won't work its way on here until i get back from break, but my other final should be up by the end of the night. Regardless, ill be home soon, lets get some food, play some music, and go to disneyland. 4lyfe

Here are a bunch of old color maquette tests i did a while ago. I did a million of these, but these are my favorites of the bunch. I'm still not quite sure which direction to take it--theres so many possibilities with this set, and since its all on such a small scale theres such great control for tweaking. I could spend an entire semester just lighting these sets, theyre so fun to do and theres somuch you can get out of them. SUPR FUN

Right now im probably leaning more towards the pink washed lighting, maybe with cooler highlights, although the deep red is kind of really nice too. But I'm also into these night-ish shots with the unfiltered highlights, and was really happy with how it looked straight up naked with no gels, but i dont know. Perhaps you guys have some suggestions? Although i will probably inevitably end up going with an overall pink or red lighting scheme, as i tend to do.

My old crate amp blew out a month ago, and is beyond my ability to salvage. Maybe its just because ive been playing anson's tiny (tiny) amp for the past few weeks, but this amp is ridiculously crisp and luscious, not to mention extremely loud. After six or eight or ten or whatever its been long weeks, I'm finally ready to move beyond puppet construction. Getting excited again, gonnna bee fuunnn to work on this again. I also have a million process photos that will work their way up here eventually and i can explain the ridiculous (extremely unnecessary) fabrication process and experimentation i went through to get these simple puppets, but im not sure if anyone reads this blog for that kind of stuff (..Sean maybe? Are you out there??). Still, itll probably be a good resource for me to put together. I learned a lot about silicone that I couldnt really find information about on the internet (Zap-A-Gap? Really?). I'm just extremely happy to finally get this indecisive puppet fabrication phase out of the way, because the actual animation and editing is much more free and stress free to me, which is quite. nice. Something to look forward to for me.

Leftover asian market steak, sliced and stuffed with mushrooms, spinach, pinenuts and blue cheese, served with sweet potatoes topped with bacon and molasses (pan fried in the bacon fat, of course). Don't be fooled though, the background bacon you see here was for Chris's separate bacon-fried-dumpling and potatoes dish (unpictured). Also present was a loaf of chocolate bread with embedded dried cherries bread from Whole Foods. I realized that I accidentally flipped the high ISO switch on my camera a week or so ago and never noticed, so all of my pictures recently have been on on the unfortunate side in terms of color saturation. But i can deal.

A Brief Update

I've fallen so far behind on what i've been meaning to post here. I've explored a whole world of potential puppet construction methods, thoroughly documented, and one day i will get around to making a mega post with that. But not tonight. I am, however, finally making progress on this excruciatingly slow project, and am almost at that delightful animation stage. If i can get the puppets up and running (haaaaa) by next week, that gives me two weeks animation time--an eternity, considering Fort Gloom was shot over the course of one to two (very long) days. I've definitely gotten too obsessed with exploring puppet construction techniques, but so much has come of it that I'm not really upset about it. Plus, kind of exciting things are starting to happen. The first step of the head cast was done tonight, so we'll see how that goes tomorrow (pictures eventually, really), which was my primary indecisive roadblock in moving along with this project. I kind of wish I had just gone with puppets like the one above, that was I could be well into animating a ridiculous puppet carnival. Maybe in the spring.

I also found this friendly gradstudent down by the canals who was moving to Seattle, and thus selling extremely cheap studio supplies--namely, $1 high gloss wood epoxy and $1 crystal-clear resin, which basically means im hoping to have extremely glossy floors for this animation, which I'm super excited about.

On another note, Thanksgiving was wonderfully rejuvinating, just what i needed. Im once again excited to work on these projects, and finish two animations in three loooong weeks. Getting ready for more naps in markethouse, and expensive brunch treats from cafe choklad. I also of course have a big thanksgiving post to put up, which should be coming around sometime this week. I've been neglecting these long status-update posts for a while, but they're nice to have around every now and then, if not just to sort out for myself what the hell im doing with these projects.

Oh, and this break has allowed me to finally get Windows 7 up and running (Digital River nightmare), the first OS upgrade I've had since 2003 or something. And I am happy to finally be running 64-bit--aside from the extra glossy-ness, there is a definite increase in efficiency that I am enjoying. Makes me wanna do after effects all day or something.

A step in the right direction for American horror --perfect pacing and a beautiful payoff. Not to mention an equally superb soundtrack. There was even a spot in the music portion of the credits for "Feedback." Legit. I was excited for this, and I'm glad that it came out on the right side of the spectrum. See it if its around you, if not, it should be on VOD for free, so get on it. In other news, I have a lot to do, and only five weeks to do it. I'll try to post some progress soon.

Series of five tape loops made for intermediate animation that tell the abstract of a story when played in sequence (or out of sequence). I'll have some videos up soon, this project was more of a pain than I had hoped for. But some really sweet loops did come out of it, so i can't complain. Also, I'm pretty damn speedy at making standard loops now, so I can pump these babies out, (should the occasion arise).

I know this is coming at you late, but it had to happen at some point (is it really already the fourth (fifth?) week?). I like to have these when the year is over to remind myself what I was doing. Kind of a light semester, I ended up dropping that History of Visual Anthropology class for that internet course at brown, which I'm currently procrastinating writing a midterm for by doing this. Also, still making sandwiches at Carr Haus, which is cool because it means one less meal I have to buy myself on Monday and Tuesday. If you're looking for a fat sandwich fix on monday or tuesday, you know where to find me.

I also recently finished the small final touches on this and think i'm ready to finally put it behind me. It was my video final from spring semester, starring my lovely alex huang, who i owe so much to (especially for coming out and filming with me during finals week). I wish i were better at uploading work quicker, because by the time i get around to putting things up the excitement has waned and they just seem silly to me. Still, if you have ten minutes to kill, i say you give it a watch. It may not be the most cohesive piece, but cohesion isn't always necesssary for enjoyment.

Finishing this was a nightmare, involving a now-broken camera and more hours spent trying to render than animating. I think I would have loved this project, those things aside. It was just a one week exercise though, so it's nothing crrzzzyyy. But hey, now that most of my work (all, actually) involves a final digital stage, I should have updates with actual content on a more regular basis.

The Return of Sushi Night
I missed first sushi night, but i heard there was a lot of sushi involved. There was still a lot leftover this time as well, as we had a hard time conquering Mt.Sushi. Kayla, head sushi chef, got really nice sashimi tuna cuts from whole foods, which i will probably never taste again. We ended up with three or four different rolls, each involving tuna or spicy tuna in some variation with avocado. There was an extreme miso soup...lots of vegetables and bits and bops, a hearty American take on miso soup, that was very warming. Loose leaf green tea, and a cabbage salad (for dessert?). As an appetizer with the miso, I also made some tsukemono for the first time, a lightly pickled cucumber dish that I was pretty happy with. The major tragedy of the night was the lack of wasabi, and the fact that we have no normal soy sauce in our house (a problem that still needs to be remedied). Only weird smokey soy sauce from New Asian Market and some horrible mushroom soy sauce. An awkward combination of sriracha and amino (funny soy sauce substitute) sort of worked, but I would have preferred my kikoman.

Roast Chicken
Picked up a roast chicken from whole foods, served with potato leek soup made from scratch by jeremy and chris, soup masters. There was also lots of gravy. I only got before and after pictures of the chicken though, so you'll have to use your imagination. The remants of the chicken served as a great broth the next day for chicken noodle soup from scratch, involving homemade noodles via chris. Fat, fat, funny, delicious, noodles.

Taco Snack
I dont even really remember what was in these, but they were delicious and jeremy and i ate 4 or 5 each, followed by half a burrito with the remaining mix. Perfect with some lime, and a good excuse to get rid of mediocre tortillas.

One of my favorite places to eat this summer, conveniently located right by my work. I wish I had more of an excuse to eat there, but no one would ever drive into the city so I'd always end up just grabbing something for myself on the way home. Below is the appetizer plate #2(for two, although it's easily enough for four), and has everything that you would ever want. Memelitas, deliciously fat and grilled corn cakes, served with tsajo (grilled beef), the best quesadilla i think i've ever had, a chile relleno, fried pork skin, all served with this amazing stringy oaxacan cheese, a black bean sauce, and a guacamole that they do not skimp out on (even with everything they give you to put it on, I've never actually ran out of it).

I'm not sure if it's "proper" to combine it all, but it doesn't really matter, because together it makes the best sopes i've had since I was a kid. Okay well, it's probably the only sopes I've had since I was a kid and we tragically moved away from our neighbors/landlords, this Mexican couple who used to cook the most delicious food. Why are sopes so delicious, yet so hard to find? Together it all just makes a super delicious corn-cake cocktail of meat, cheese, and nostalgia, and I can't wait to go back more when I return for the winter. Also worthy of being mentioned, they have one of the best horchatas i've ever had, served with bits of melon and almonds inside, if I'm remembering correctly, something excitingly new and tasty to me. I also owe a big thanks to Allyn, who enlightened me to look into los angeles oaxacan restaurants. Long story short, friends of the valley, it is well worth the 20-minute drive to melrose to eat this, so get on it.

FISHLIPS SUSHI TRUCK

I know the idea of sushi from a truck is something really unappealing, but the Fishlips sushi truck has some pretty good sushi, considering its coming out a truck. Just look at how cute their little temari sushi balls are! Everything I tasted from there was fresh and delicious, and I have no complaints about it. What really caught my eye on the menu was the tropical salmon roll (avocado, cucumber, asparagus, kaiware, yama-gobo, bell pepper, salmon, lemon, mango, ponzu sauce), but they were all out of it when we got there (the downside of serving out of a truck), so I settled for the shrimp caterpillar roll instead. Guy and Jake got these little sets that were a really good value (temari sushi + california/spicy/or crunchy roll for $6-8). When we went they were parked right outside of CSUN, making it a convenient, quick, tasty and fairly cheap sushi expedition, so go find out where they are and get some sushi.

I'm back in providence, so come visit me. School doesnt start for a week and a half, which gives me lots of free time, something im really enjoying. i know i spent the entire summer sitting at home doing nothing, but i finally feel like im able to relax, while at home i just felt like i was wasting time. its really hot in my room right now, but once september is over ill be thankful for it.

I only went to disneyland three times this summer. but i did renew my annual pass. My new picture is wack. Our trips included lots of chimichanga eating, and jalapeno cheese pretzel eating. There was lots of eating other things, too, like clam chowder. But that was just alright (an unfortunately bad decision over the gumbo). Other things ingested include: churros, cobb salad(s), cold coffee, lots of hot coffee, apple pie, beef gumbo, pickles, and ice cream. I wanted to get a corn dog too, but never got around to it. I was also really bad at taking pictures of everything.

And as usual, our trip was pretttyyy crazy.

Im glad i got to go on Pinnochio before I left (which was clsoed for the first half of the summer). Also, crazy empty the last day we went, which was nice. 25-min wait for space mountain at noon, first ride of the day, a pretty rare occurence. New small world is pretty dope too, although I think it was already like that when I went in the spring...but whatever, go on it, sweet escape from the heat. Also, conveniently located right next to a churro stand.

Back home, I guess my city is on fire right now. Or at least the mountains next door to my city. Whatever, but it looked pretty sweet driving home at night, as you were merging onto the 210-W it almost looked like you were driving right into the depths of Mordor. I liked to play lightningbolt loudly and drive really fast and pretend something really big was about to happen whenever i drove home, which is something I'll actually miss. I will not, however, miss the freeways heading into the valley, where I probably spent the majority of my summer. In traffic. With no air conditioning.

But its getting better, somtehing like 45% contained now, which is a lot better than the 5% when I was leaving. Which is cool, because breathing kind of sucked when I was there.

Back to providence, our house was really gross, but is a lot better now, so I think Lily can visit. Like I said, im not really doing anything, which is really nice, I have a lot of small things I want to finish before school starts. We picked up an old four track tape recorder and this sweet old VHS camera from 2nd life yesterday--the camera is totally 90s pro-grade, so lots of good stuff will be coming from those. Also, live dance remixes of middle eastern casette tapes played through a bunch of analog effects(??) Picked up this really sweet childrens book called Chimpsey at Play today from some place on Wickenden I'd never been, really sweet illustrations by Dic Loscalzo. I love how they tell the story, too. A good excuse to learn how to use my new (old) scanner/printer/whatever i found at the end of last year. Apparently, it works.

But now that I'm back, i should hopefully update more often. Something about having no free time makes me want to update more than when I have absolutely nothing to do.
